Until Were Dead
Star Fucking Hipsters
THE REVIEW:
The Star Fucking Hipsters debut release, a full length on Fat Wreck Chords, is bound to make a few waves amongst punk fans of all types. The band has its origins in Leftover Crack, where in 2004 Scott Sturgeon and drummer Brandon Chevalier-Kolling wanted to make a side project with a rotating lineup of friends with both male and female vocals. After the death of Brandon, Sturgeon was able to continue the project with Nico De Gaillo (vocals), Frank Piegaro (Guitar/Bass), Yula Beeri (Bass), and Ara Slack (drums).
With this lineup we finally have their first full length; a clearly different sound than anything else on Fat Wreck, and an impressive release that I honestly didn´t expect. The album is catchy, melodic, poppy, angry, crunchy, and grainy all at the same time. It´s what a punk rock record should be, but rarely is.
From the first track (well, second, the first is them introducing themselves) they hit the ground running with the titular track aggressive and fast yet droning and long for a punk song. In fact, all the tracks are longer than the average punk song which works for some, but not all. The dual male-female vocals work well together and sound very different in the next track, “Immigrants And Hypocrites,” where Nico sounds much more girly until drifting to the gritty sound while chanting “we´ll all sleep when we´re dead.” The next track, “Two Cups of Tea” was the one chosen by Fat Wreck as the free mp3 download from their website, and is one of the catchiest on the album. It caught me by surprise with its melodic sections and harsh outbursts, a good starting point if you want a sample of the band. Ska riffs are most evident in the track “Snitch To The Suture,” political opinions are most expressed on tracks such as “9-11 Was (An Inside Joke)” and “This Wal-Mart Life,” while the album ends on a very decadent sounding note with the eight minute “Death Or Fight.”
Overall this is one of the best CD´s I have heard this year. It´s probably too poppy for some, too harsh for others, but for me at least, it rides that line in just the right tone.
