THE REVIEW:

I remember the golden days of metalcore in 2002 when Killswitch Engage released “Alive Or Just Breathing”. The album basically started todays metalcore scene and most of the band´s playing the specific music style marks “KSE” as their influence. One of the many bands playing the genre is Vaasa, Finland based Process Pain which was originally started in 2006 by Teemu Hauta (Drums), Lauri Laakso (Guitars) and Toni Riihiluoma (Guitars). In the beginning the group started jamming some heavy rock covers together but soon after they started to work with their own material. After jamming together for a while the group recruited Teemu Björn (Bass) and Jan-Erik Niemi (Vocals) into the group´s ranks to finalize the line-up. The band put the finishing touches to their first demo titled “The Beginning” at Biotech Studios with producer Hannu Koivisto and as a result the four-song demo was born.

What happens when you combine the producer / live mixer of Finnish Nicole to a band that has taken influences from Lamb Of God, Killswitch Engage and Chimaira and put them together in studio? Well the result is quite easy to figure out for each one of you knowing the bands and their music styles. The style Process Pain plays is a mixture of melodic death metal, metal and hardcore. What makes Process Pain separate from the mass is that there aren´t any clean vocals in “The Beginning”. Vocalist Jan-Erik Niemi has a great voice and his death metallic shouts / growls fit really nicely into the heavy atmosphere. As a vocalist he reminds me as a combination of Mark Hunter (Chimaira) and Ilkka Laitala (Nicole) while spitting the blood out of his lungs. The shredders Toni Riihiluoma and Lauri Laakso have managed to pull out few working and original ideas but unfortunately in this already overpopulated genre it´s really hard to come up with ideas that makes the band separate from the mass. Drummer Teemu Hauta does fine job behind the drum kit and he surely gives all the back fire into the guitars they need to make them sound strong and powerful. As a highlight track I would go for the opening track “Selfconfidense” which have earth shattering drumming from Teemu as well as some thunderous guitar riffs from Toni and Lauri.

I must admit that there are quite many similar bands in the overpopulated scene of metalcore so it´s pretty hard for a Finnish band to make a name abroad and get big. Process Pain still has their own creative moments with “The Beginning” which is definitely a positive thing to notice. The production of the demo is top notch because of Hannu Koivisto so there really isn´t anything huge to complain about the sound world. The vocalist Jan-Erik Niemi has a powerful and enjoyable voice so at this point the band should try to focus to write more unique and memorable riffs and get more live shows under their belts before heading back to studio. If they manage to continue progressing their sound into a more unique approaching, no one knows what will happen for the band in the future. Still this is by far the best demo I have heard in 2008 when it comes to metalcore. Keep up the good work!
