Shortcuts To A Dead End
Monsteriser

THE REVIEW:

Grunge is a genre that has had more discussion, whether nothing else than Nirvana has ever been grunge. Monsteriser says that they play heavy-grunge, whatever that is, but as far as I consider grunge, they actually seem to get pretty close, at least.

As a sophomore album (and I havenīt even heard the acclaimed debut), this seems a bit hard to get into in the beginning. The sounds has a little resemblance to Alice In Chains and sometimes with Black Audio. But as Miitri Aaltonen as their vocalist, the music mostly resembles the deceased Magneetti, mostly because heīs the singer in both.

The weird thing is, that Magneetti never made it big, and now Monsteriser is being praised and hailed. Not that itīs a bad thing. But as considering the grunge-genre, the sound they have is really simplistic and has some weird solutions to play tunes and the sound seems a bit plain. Just like Magneetti had, except they sang in Finnish. And for some reason, that seems to work better, than hard-filled, overflowing riffs.

The songs themselves vary from slow- to mid-tempo rocking. Speed isnīt the main point on this album. All through the album thereīs a bit sad atmosphere, so this album isnīt for the cheery “letīs get this party started” -kind of moods.

Personally I think Iīd need to see these guys play live, before I could really decide how much I like them. If they have the same sound on stage as they have on the album, they might be really good.
