Overworld
Machinae Supremacy
THE REVIEW:
It´s always a dilemma, when a band picks a pompous name and the basically does just the opposite of what the name suggests. Machinae Supremacy calls itself as SID-metal, mainly because they use SID chip from Commodore 64 as their electronic sound. Basically the idea is the same as on Nintendocore. Whatever you want to call it, it´s metal with 8-bit machine sounds. Anyway Machinae Supremacy is releasing their third album “Overworld”, which is not bad at all from a band that started as a C64 game song cover band.
The first thing that I noticed on the album was, of course, the SID sounds, which seemed to go nicely with the music. But the more I listened to it, the more I would have wanted of the SID sounds to be used more aggressively, now they just seem to blend in the background and become almost non-existent and that just makes Machinae Supremacy one of the countless metal bands without something really exiting to offer. Not that the the music is bad or anything, the songs do work nicely, although they seem to lack something to really grab on to.
Robert Stjärnström as a vocalist isn´t really that exiting or original. He sounds a bit like Ville Tuomi of Suburban Tribe that has caught a cold. Stjärnström seems to fit on these songs and has his moments on some songs, but mostly he doesn't seem to have any feelings on his voice, which makes it a bit too mechanical. None of the real songs on the album go beneath the shit-line, but they don´t really go above the excellent-line either. They seem to hover between generic and a little bit interesting, with one exception. That exception is one of the most saddest moments of the album: A Britney Spears cover “Gimme More”. If it´s supposed to be a joke, I´m not laughing and if not, I just can´t imagine what they were thinking.
As a total the album is pretty good, but it could be better. Probably all the fans will love it, hard to say. People who listen more of these 8-bit cores could disagree. Personally I wish the music was a bit darker and harder, more to the way of HORSE The Band, since now it´s just a bit too light. At least they should make the SID more important part of the songs.
