The Game
Verenn
THE REVIEW:
Verenn is one of the hard working finnish rock bands at the moment. The band has their own record label Matara Music and they just pulled out their first album "The Game" , consisting of 10 nice mid-tempo rock ballads which have gotten influences from both grunge and metal music.
What makes Verenn differ from the traditional finnish bands is their nice soft sound which is really hallucinating and addictive. When the first single from the new record titled "No Trace, No Sound" appeared I was totally boundered to bands nice synth riffs and calm sing-a-longs which were totally captivating. Unfortunately the band couldn´t capture the same feeling to the record. The band combines nicely grunge, rock and metal into one tight combination but at some points the sound becomes too thick to the listener. The best thing on "The Game" is that the album really isn´t repetitive. This could be taken as a positive or as a negative aspect because the songs variate maybe a bit too much from each other for listener to get a good picture of the record. Usually when it comes to this kind of "popmetal" the soft parts are a bit too soft but Verenn has a good rock attitude throughout the record making it way more enjoyable to listen than average "pop" metal records. As a pick ups from the record I would say that "No Trace No Sound" and "Glass House" are the highlight tracks of the record that I warmly recommend everyone to check out.
The guys of Verenn have done good job with "The Game". The album is really professionally mixed / produced and the sound world is just as good as it should be. I expected a bit more from the record after hearing their previous EP´s and the hit single but the result is satisfying if you compare it to the fact that this is their debut. Verenn has the potential to improve their sound and I am quite sure that their next album will be way more tighter and better than this one. This was a good warm-up for the band who just started the game. Hopefully they will get into the third base with their next offering.
