A City By the Light Divided
Thursday

THE REVIEW:

Thursday, covered in a DIY underground hardcore background, express their socialist, anti-corporation, anti-conformist opinions through their lyrics, and they kept these lyrics even when they hit big with their CD War All The Time. As the hype began to pass away, they released A City By The Light Divided, a much different CD for Thursday, but a very good one. The band is obviously influenced by Sigur Ros/M83 type bands but still have their hardcore background ("At This Velocity" - gang shouts). Although the screaming has cut down, and they have less of the intense build-up at the ending of each song as in their earlier releases (think TBS, but more talented), but some of their songs still rip off plenty of raw emotion, obviously influenced by their background by touring with screamo bands such as Neil Perry and You & I ("Sugar In The Sacrament"). Also, some oddly placed U2 influences appear ("Running From The Rain"), but they perfect it and make it freaking beautiful (that song has even appeared in a car commercial). So, the breakdown (by the way, they don't have any brutal breakdowns like in "Autobiography of a Nation" or "How Long Is The Night?"):

The Otherside of The Crash - 7/10. What a weak beginning, but a decent song.

Counting 5-4-3-2-1 - 9/10. This song really kicks it off and does a great job at it. The ending(s) of the song sound a lot like their "Full Collapse" days and the lyrics really get the goosebumps going.

Sugar In The Sacrament - 10/10. Pure emotion at the end, and a catchy song other than that. What a great song.

At This Velocity - 8/10. I like to hear the hardcore influences and I like how they use the speed and the atmosphere to create a setting in your mind, but the song just lacks for some reason. I'm not a fan of gang vocals.

We Will Overcome - 8/10. I really like the ending, and I basically like the whole song, but it really doesn't HIT you.

Arc - 7/10. At first I thought this song was useless, but the more I listen to it, it seems more like a relief to prepare for the songs to come, and it's very melodic.

Running From the Rain - 10/10. A perfected U2 mixed with Thursday and Sigur Ros. Beautiful and the lyrics are amazing.

Telegraph Avenue Kiss - 9/10. Originally this was my favorite song, because it's just really intense the whole way through. A great song.

The Lovesong Writer - 5/10. Too angsty and boring.

Into The Blinding Light - 8/10. This song saves the CD from having a very weak ending. Sure, it's not that great, but the synthesizer sounds awesome, and everything just flows nicely... and the ending is intense.

Autumn Leaves Revisited - 4/10. What the fuck kind of an ending is this?

This song has a bunch of great songs, and the beginning/middle rock, but the ending extremely lacks and the CD doesn't necessarily flow as a whole.

AVG: 7.7/10

Thursday fans (I must say remove the "heartfelt" ones - let's limit ourselves to the "occasional" ones) were disappointed like hell with this release. It is indeed hard to swallow, but once properly digested, the record kind of grows onto you, for sure.
